Coalition Aims to Prove Importance of NAFTA to Trump, Feds
USAgNet - 01/19/2018

A newly-formed coalition made up of dozens of farm groups says it will do all it can to ensure President Trump and Congressional leaders understand the importance of preserving and modernizing the North American Free Trade Agreement to America's agricultural and retail economies. Americans for Farmers & Families--which is made up of 30 organizations representing growers, refiners, producers, transporters, retailers and consumers--claims food and agriculture exports have more than quadrupled and account for 25 percent of American exports since NAFTA went into effect in 1994.

"Farm Belt voters supported President Trump by a three-to-one margin in the last election and they are counting on him to improve NAFTA in the modernization negotiations," said John Bode, president and CEO of the Corn Refiners Association. "It's not an exaggeration to say many farmers are still farming today because of NAFTA. We know that President Trump has a lot of experience negotiating good deals. We support him in updating and improving NAFTA."

Leaders of the coalition further say that NAFTA has opened new markets, grown domestic jobs and supported $127 billion in annual economic activity.

American Farm Bureau President Zippy Duvall adds that the trade deal more than quadrupled agricultural exports to Canada and Mexico.

In the coming weeks, AFF will be launching a robust educational campaign to highlight the positive impact NAFTA achieves for Americans and lay the groundwork for an updated trade agreement that preserves America's strong economic standing.
