U.S. Milk Production Up During First Quarter of 2017

Milk production in the United States during the January through March quarter totaled 53.5 billion pounds, up 1.0 percent from the same time period a year earlier.

The average number of milk cows in the country during the first quarter was 9.37 million head, which is about 25,000 head more than the fourth quarter of 2016 and 57,000 head more than the same period last year.

As of March, California continues to have the highest total production with about 3.5 billion pounds, but was one of just five states that had lower production compared to last year. Texas had the greatest increase in year-to-year output as that state produced 1.06 billion pounds of milk in March, up 16.4 percent from the same month last year.
