More Ohioans Urged to Consider Apprenticeships
Ohio Ag Connection - 11/17/2017

During National Apprenticeship Week -- Nov. 13-19 -- the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services joins Gov. Kasich and Lt. Gov. Taylor in encouraging more Ohioans to consider registered apprenticeship programs, which allow workers to earn while they learn and bypass student loan debt.

"For individuals, the programs can provide a smooth pathway to a good-paying, in-demand career, and for businesses, they provide a low-cost way to build a workforce with employees trained to industry specifications," Kasich and Taylor said in a resolution.

With more than 18,000 apprentices in more than 200 occupations, Ohio ranks second in the nation and first in the region in the number of apprentices. Opportunities are available in fields as diverse as aerospace, construction, energy, health care, advanced manufacturing, computer programming and more. Each program includes at least 2,000 hours of structured on-the-job training and 144 hours a year of related classroom instruction.

In addition, through a unique partnership with 10 community colleges across the state, eligible apprentices may be able to receive tuition reimbursement for enrolling in pre-apprenticeship and registered apprenticeship programs in occupations identified by local businesses as needing workers. "Students are full-time employees from day one of their registered apprenticeships, and they can graduate college debt-free," said Cynthia Dungey, director of the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services, which manages ApprenticeOhio. "Employers gain ready access to a stream of qualified employees, and those employees earn good wages: as much as $60,000 a year. We encourage all Ohioans interested in launching new careers, and any employers interested in growing their businesses, to explore ApprenticeOhio today."
