Farm Bureau Responding to Proposed Coyote Rules
Ohio Ag Connection - 02/19/2020

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Wildlife has submitted proposals to the Ohio Wildlife Council to change certain rules relating to coyotes. One of the Division of Wildlife's proposals would require fur taker permits for the hunting and trapping of coyotes hunted or trapped on land owned by another person. The current exemption allowing a landowner to hunt and trap coyotes on his own land without a fur taker permit would remain.

Another Division of Wildlife proposal would also limit the trapping of coyotes to the current trapping season for fox, raccoon, skunk, opossum, and weasel, which is November 10th through January 31st. This would be a substantial change from current regulations which allow for an open season on coyotes, regardless of the manner in which they are taken (trapping, gun, etc.), and do not require a fur taker permit for coyotes.

Roger High, director of livestock for Ohio Farm Bureau and executive director of the Ohio Sheep Improvement Association, is speaking out to media this week to discuss Ohio Farm Bureau's concerns regarding these proposals and their impact on livestock farmers. High is addressingL

- How this differs from the current law for hunting or trapping coyotes?

- Why is the ODNR proposing these coyote regulations?

- Will coyote hunting regulations of landowner exemptions be changed in this process?
