Freight Railroad Revenue to Reach $83.6 Billion in 2021
Ohio Ag Connection - 04/24/2017

The U.S. freight railroad industry is forecast to generate revenues of $83.6 billion in 2021, according to Freight by Rail: United States, a report recently released by Freedonia Focus Reports. Freight railroad carriers will benefit from the growing volume of goods that will require transport throughout the supply chain and to distribution centers as manufacturers' shipments, retail sales, and trade levels continue to rise.

Among specific sectors, railroad carriers will benefit from expected growth in US coal mining output, as coal represents the leading commodity transported by rail in volume terms. In addition, output of chemicals and allied products, one of the most profitable railroad cargos to transport, is projected to see respectable growth to 2021.

The US freight railroad industry comprises more than 500 companies, but only seven participate as Class I firms. Furthermore, a subset of those Class I carriers dominate the vast majority of industry revenues and cargo volume.

These and other key insights are featured in Freight by Rail: United States. This report forecasts US freight railroad revenues in US dollars as well as volume hauled in ton-miles to 2021. Total revenues and volume are segmented by carrier type in terms of:

- Class I railroads

- other freight railroads such as short line and regional railroads

To illustrate historical trends, total revenues, total volume, the various segments, and trade are provided in annual series from 2006 to 2016. Market share for Class I carriers in terms of revenue and volume is also provided.
