Ohio Mink Pelt Production Under 75,000

Mink pelt production in Ohio was 74,680 pelts in 2016, according to Cheryl Turner, state statistician of the USDA, NASS, Ohio Field Office. Female mink bred to produce kits in 2017 totaled 13,780.

Mink pelt production in the United States in 2016 totaled 3.32 million pelts. Wisconsin, the largest mink producing State, produced 1,196,310 pelts. Utah, the second largest producing State, produced 768,010 pelts.

The number of pelts by color class as a percent of the total U.S. production in 2016 is as follows: Black at 51 percent, Mahogany at 21 percent, Blue Iris at 7 percent, and White at 6 percent. The remaining color classes accounted for 15 percent. Value of mink pelts produced during the 2016 crop year was $116 million. The average price per pelt for the 2016 crop year was $35.00.

Nationally, female mink bred to produce kits in 2017 totaled 740,810. Percent of total females bred to produce kits in 2017 by color class is as follows: Black at 50 percent, Mahogany at 21 percent, White at 7 percent, and Blue Iris at 6 percent. The remaining color classes accounted for 16 percent.
