Delay in Pet Care Due to Shortage of Veterinarians
Ohio Ag Connection - 07/01/2020

The executive director of the Ohio Vet Medical Association, Jack Advent, said most of the state is seeing a shortage of veterinarians.

"The last two to three years we're really seeing an uptick in the need for associate veterinarians; pretty much in practices all over the state of Ohio," Advent told WFMJ TV 21.

He said the number of applicants from vet school is not going down, but the main issue is unlike other professions licensed by state, licensed vets are free to practice where they want. Local vet offices are seeing this effect in the Mahoning Valley.

"I've been looking for almost two years for another veterinarian," Dr. John Daugherty, owner of Poland Veterinary Centre, said. "There are three of us, but we need another doctor."

Because of the pandemic, The Poland Vet Centre, along with a handful of vet offices in the Valley hasn't been taking new patients for weeks. Doctors said this could lead to a delay in pet care with added strain on doctors putting in more hours.

"We weren't allowed to do any routine care for several weeks, so we have a backlog of that plus our current patients," Daugherty said.

Advent said many offices across Ohio are experiencing this issue. He also said many clients noticed more issues with their pets during the COVID-19 pandemic since they are home a lot more.
