Ohio Expecting Record-Breaking Corn and Soybean Yields

Ohio growers are anticipating record breaking corn and soybean yields in 2018, according to Cheryl Turner, State Statistician, USDA, NASS, Ohio Field Office. Highlights of the August 1 Crop Production report follow:

- Ohio's average corn yield is forecast at 180 bushels per acre, 3 bushels above last year. If realized, this will be a new record yield. Total production is forecast at 596 million bushels, up 8 percent from last year.

- Soybean yield is forecast at 56 bushels per acre, up 6.5 bushels from last year. If realized, this will be a new record yield. Total production is forecast at 277 million bushels, up 10 percent from last year.

- Winter Wheat yield is estimated at 75 bushels per acre, up 1 bushel from last year.

- Ohio's oat yield is forecast at 65 bushels per acre, 5 bushels below last year. Total production is forecast at 1.30 million bushels.

- Hay producers expect to harvest 390,000 acres of alfalfa hay with an average yield of 3.1 tons per acre. Total production is forecast at 1.21 million tons. All other hay for harvest is expected at 720,000 acres with an average yield of 1.7 tons per acre. Total State production is forecast at 1.22 million tons.

The Ohio 2018 apple production forecast is 45.0 million pounds, down 2.0 million pounds from last year. U.S. apple production is forecast is 11.5 billion pounds, up less than 1 percent from the previous year. The Ohio grape production forecast is 5,000 tons, compared with 4,640 tons in 2017. The U.S. grape production forecast is 7.66 million tons, up 4 percent from last year. The Ohio peach production forecast is 3,680 tons, down from 4,200 tons from last year. The U.S. peach crop forecast is 732,050 million tons, up 5 percent from 2017.
