Ohio Corn Production Down, Soybean Forecast Up

Ohio farmers anticipate harvesting record soybean yields in 2022, according to Cheryl Turner, state statistician, USDA NASS, Ohio Field Office. Spring planting was delayed due to cold, wet conditions which negatively impacted potential corn yields, however soybean planting, which started behind schedule was able to wrap up on-time or earlier than the 5-year average on most farms.
As of July 31, seventy-seven percent of Ohio corn was silked and 82 percent of soybeans were blooming; corn was 2 percentage points ahead of the 5-year average while soybeans were 6 points ahead of the 5-year average.
Highlights of the August 1 Crop Production report follow:
- Ohio's average corn yield is forecast at 190 bushels per acre, 3 bushels below last year. Total production is forecast at 602 million bushels, down 7 percent from last year.
- Soybean yield is forecast at 57 bushels per acre, up 0.5 bushels from last year. If realized, this will be a record high by 0.5 bushels. Total production is forecast at 281 million bushels, up 2 percent from last year.
- Winter Wheat yield is estimated at 78 bushels per acre, down 7 bushels from last year. Total production is forecast at 37.4 million bushels.
