Longest-Serving General Manager of Ohio State Fair Retires
Ohio Ag Connection - 06/07/2023

Virgil Strickler, the Ohio State Fair's longest-serving general manager, has announced his retirement, marking the end of a distinguished career that spanned several decades. Ohio Governor Mike DeWine initiated a nationwide search for Strickler's successor as the general manager of the Ohio Expo Center & State Fair.

Having joined the Ohio Expo Center in 1993 as the agriculture director, Strickler ascended to the role of general manager in 2004. A native of Fairfield County, he has been instrumental in the fair's growth and success over the years. Strickler expressed his gratitude for the three decades he spent at the Ohio State Fair, emphasizing the significance of Ohio's county and independent fairs in shaping the state fair's strength.

Strickler's notable achievements include the establishment of the Youth Reserve Program in 1995, which has provided more than $4.6 million in scholarships to over 44,500 youth exhibitors. In recognition of his dedication, the program has been renamed the Virgil L. Strickler Youth Reserve Program.

Under Strickler's leadership, the Ohio State Fair has witnessed numerous advancements and improvements. His guidance and vision led to facility enhancements, such as air conditioning and ventilation improvements, as well as the introduction of innovative agricultural education programs.

Angela Krile, chair of the Ohio Expositions Commission, commended Strickler's contributions and expressed confidence in the continued excellence of the Ohio Expo Center and State Fair. A committee chaired by Mary Mertz, Director of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, has been tasked with identifying candidates for the general manager position.

Strickler's retirement leaves a significant void in the Ohio State Fair's leadership. His dedication to the fair and the agricultural community has earned him prestigious industry awards and honors. As Ohio seeks a new general manager, Strickler's legacy of leadership and commitment to the fair's mission will serve as a guiding light for future endeavors.
