US hog Inventory sees small rise
USAgNet - 10/02/2023

The United States has seen a slight bump in its hog and pig numbers. As per the fresh-out-of-the-oven report by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS), as of September 1, our farms housed a 74.3 million animals. That's a little more than what we had last September and a 2% increase since June 2023.

Breaking it down a bit, 68.2 million of these were market hogs while the remaining 6.08 million were for breeding. During the summer months, from June to August 2023, 34.2 million were added to US farms. And for the math whizzes out there, that's an average of 11.61 pigs per litter.

US hog producers there are aiming for 2.93 million sows to farrow between September and November. And another 2.91 million between December and February 2024.

Curious about which state is the hog champ? Iowa stands tall with 24.4 million head. Minnesota and North Carolina follow with 8.70 million and 8.00 million respectively.
