Dr. Jerry and Rita Lahmers were awarded the 2023 Yvonne Lesicko Perseverance Prize by the Ohio Farm Bureau Foundation. Their dedicated work in Newcomerstown's farming community led to the creation of the Check Your Engine – Mental Health Project.
This initiative, developed in collaboration with local mental wellness organizations and various county Farm Bureaus, aims to address mental health issues prevalent in rural areas. Similar to a check engine light signaling a vehicle issue, the project identifies signs indicating when farmers might need support and offers guidance on addressing these concerns.
The Y Prize, established in memory of Yvonne Lesicko, honors initiatives vital to farming communities. Jerry Lahmers highlighted the crucial role mental health professionals play and encouraged collaboration between the agricultural sector and these experts to understand and address mental health challenges effectively.
Rita Lahmers stressed the need for counselors to gain a better understanding of farming communities, emphasizing the complexity of farming-related stressors. Winning the Y Prize provides the Lahmers with a platform to raise awareness and resources for farm stress and mental health.
