Ohio State's Livestock Team Triumphs in 2023 Season

By Andi Anderson

The Ohio State University's Livestock Judging Team concluded its 2023 season on a high note, showcasing remarkable skill and dedication. Comprising of seniors majoring in animal sciences - Ryan Michael, Morgan Price, Sarah Belmonte, Ellie Shaw, Dawson Osborn, and Stephen Parthemore - the team finished as the 13th High Team in the senior college competition at the prestigious North American International Livestock Exposition (NAILE) in Louisville.

Their successful season was marked by a series of notable accomplishments. At the Purdue Boilermaker Classic, they clinched second High Team overall, excelling in placings and reasons. The Keystone International Livestock Exposition in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, saw them emerge as the third High Team, with a particular strength in swine judging. Furthermore, they secured the 12th High Team overall position at the American Royal in Kansas City.

Individually, Ryan Michael shone as a star performer. He secured the 19th High Individual overall rank, with impressive placements in both cattle and swine categories. Throughout the season, Ryan was a consistent top performer, securing high ranks at various competitions including the Purdue Boilermaker Classic and Keystone.

The team's success can be attributed to their adaptability and innate ability to evaluate livestock, qualities that their coach, Matthew Chaney from the Department of Animal Sciences, emphasized with pride. This season marked a significant achievement for his first team, setting a high standard for future competitors.

As they look back on a season filled with learning, growth, and achievements, the Livestock Judging Team at Ohio State University has not only demonstrated their expertise in the field of animal sciences but also set an inspiring example for aspiring students in the agricultural sector. Their journey through the season is a testament to their hard work, skill, and the high-quality education provided by Ohio State University.
