Shannon Washburn has been reappointed as chair of the Department of Agricultural Communication, Education, and Leadership (ACEL) at The Ohio State University College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences (CFAES). His new term will be effective from July 1 through June 30, 2028.
Washburn, who holds the Sanford G. Price and Isabelle P. Barbee Chair in Teaching, Advising, and Learning, joined ACEL as professor and chair in 2020.
Before this role, he served as an assistant dean of Academic Programs for the College of Agriculture at Kansas State University from 2015 to 2020. There, he led student retention efforts, facilitated faculty and staff professional development, and coordinated course and curriculum processes.
Washburn's tenure at Kansas State also included roles as a professor and associate professor of agricultural education.
He earned his PhD in agricultural education from the University of Missouri, a Master of Science in secondary education, and a Bachelor of Science in agricultural education from Kansas State.
“We look forward to Shannon’s continued leadership with his reappointment as professor and chair of ACEL,” said Cathann A. Kress, Ohio State vice president for agricultural administration and CFAES dean.
“He brings an accomplished and unique skillset, which ensures continued success within the department and the college.”
In his second term, Washburn will focus on fostering effective, collegial, cooperative, and productive relationships among students, staff, and faculty within the department.
He will also develop a vision for the OSU Leadership Center and support the success of undergraduate and graduate education programs.
Washburn will promote collaborations with university partners and external stakeholders to increase the department’s state, national, and international presence.
“I’m excited with the opportunity to continue working with our talented students, staff, and faculty toward our goal of creating a thriving and sustainable future by advancing excellence in communication, education, and leadership within the agricultural and broader community,” Washburn said.
“I feel so fortunate to have the opportunity to lead within the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences and to carry forward the rich tradition of excellence in our department and college.”
Washburn’s reappointment is subject to approval by Ohio State’s Office of Academic Affairs and Board of Trustees.
