USDA boosts Ohio meat industry

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has announced a significant investment of $110 million in the nation's meat supply chain, with nearly $9 million allocated to Ohio.

This funding is part of the Meat and Poultry Expansion Program and the Local Meat Capacity Grant Program, aimed at strengthening local processing capabilities and enhancing the resilience of the food supply chain.

“We have a meat industry that is really dominated by a few large multi-national processors - very efficient. That's why we can have a cheap, affordable and safe food supply, but as we learned during the COVID-19 pandemic, disruptions in that system can cause problems up and down the line, so we want to support local food, so people can have options and access and that there is more resiliency in that food supply chain," said agriculture expert Andy Vance.

According to the USDA, the investment will support the development of new processing facilities in Ohio, creating jobs and expanding local meat production.

Case Custom Meats, for instance, will build a new facility for processing cattle, hogs, lambs, and goats, which is expected to create seven new jobs.

In addition, Whitewater Processing LLC plans to build a new processing facility, which will add 80 full-time positions. This new facility will serve four new turkey producers, further diversifying Ohio’s meat supply chain.

These investments are crucial for ensuring a more resilient and flexible meat supply chain in Ohio and across the nation. By supporting local processors, the USDA aims to mitigate the risks associated with relying on a few large multi-national companies and provide consumers with more options and access to locally sourced meat products.

The funding will help build infrastructure that not only boosts local economies but also ensures that food supply chains can better withstand disruptions like those experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The USDA's commitment to enhancing local food processing capabilities reflects a broader strategy to promote food security and economic stability in rural communities.

Through these programs, the USDA continues to support agricultural producers and rural businesses, fostering growth and innovation within the local meat processing industry.

The nearly $9 million investment in Ohio is a testament to the federal government's dedication to strengthening the nation’s food supply chain from the ground up.
