Boosting Rural Economy: Ohio Receives $200,000 Grant to Support Cooperative Businesses

U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown has announced a significant grant of $199,974 from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to The Ohio State University. The grant aims to provide crucial support to cooperative businesses across rural Ohio, fostering economic growth and creating employment opportunities. The funding will be allocated towards feasibility studies, business analysis, and technical assistance, enabling these businesses to enhance their capacity and thrive.

Senator Brown expressed his enthusiasm for the investment, stating, "This funding will empower small businesses in rural Ohio to generate jobs and open doors for opportunity within our communities. I remain committed to ensuring that small businesses and rural areas receive the necessary support to prosper and flourish."

Dr. Jackie Wilkins, Associate Dean and Director of Ohio State University Extension, highlighted the project's objective of promoting awareness and understanding of the cooperative business model. By equipping cooperative founders and leaders with essential skills, the initiative aims to tackle challenges faced by rural communities and foster their success in entrepreneurial endeavors.

The grant forms part of the USDA's Rural Development initiative, which provides affordable funding to develop critical community facilities in rural areas. This program facilitates infrastructure improvements and essential community services, including emergency response vehicles and equipment, strengthening small towns and cities.

Senator Brown's consistent advocacy for Ohio's rural communities has been instrumental in securing crucial funding for USDA grant and loan programs. Notably, he is the first Ohioan in over five decades to serve on the Senate Agriculture Committee, demonstrating his unwavering commitment to supporting rural development.

With this grant, Ohio is poised to witness the growth of cooperative businesses, driving economic revitalization, and empowering rural communities to thrive in today's competitive landscape.
