Livestock producers are being encouraged to remain vigilant about fertilizer and insecticide safety, especially during the hot summer months when cattle require reliable access to clean water. According to Dr. Scott Radke, DVM, MS, DABVT, Clinical Associate Professor, Iowa State University, recent cases investigated by the Iowa State University Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory have highlighted the dangers associated with chemical contamination.

In an August 19, 2026 update, Dr. Radke reported that several incidents involving cattle deaths have been linked to water stored in tanks that were previously used for fertilizers or pesticides. These cases resulted in the loss of multiple otherwise healthy animals and serve as a reminder of the importance of proper livestock management practices.

One of the greatest concerns arises when producers reuse large plastic or steel tanks that once carried fertilizers or agricultural chemicals. During periods of drought, high temperatures, or equipment failures, farmers may need alternative water sources for their livestock. While used tanks may seem like a practical solution because of their large capacity and ease of transportation, they can still contain harmful chemical residues even after repeated cleaning.

As noted in the report, "Even when rinsed, water hauled in used pesticide or fertilizer tanks can be toxic to cattle." This warning highlights the hidden risks associated with reusing agricultural equipment for water storage.

The issue becomes especially important during summer when cattle consume greater amounts of water. Any contamination can increase the risk of poisoning and result in severe health complications or death. Fertilizers and insecticides contain substances that are beneficial for crop production but can be highly dangerous when accidentally ingested by livestock.

Dr. Radke explained that the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory has received reports involving both fertilizer and insecticide exposures over the past several months. These cases demonstrate that even small amounts of residual chemicals can create significant problems for cattle herds.

To reduce risk, farmers should use only tanks specifically designated for water storage and avoid repurposing containers that have previously held pesticides, fertilizers, or other agricultural chemicals. Regular inspection of watering systems and maintaining dependable water supplies can also help protect livestock during periods of extreme heat.

The recent cases serve as an important reminder that prevention is the best defense against livestock poisoning. By following proper safety practices and ensuring access to clean water, producers can safeguard animal health and avoid costly losses.
