Dodder, commonly known as strangle weed, is a parasitic plant that poses a serious threat to clover and alfalfa production. According to Mercy Odemba, Eugene Law, PhD, Alyssa Essman, and Emma Matcham, Ohio State University Extension, this weed can significantly impact forage crops by attaching to host plants and drawing nutrients directly from them.
Dodder belongs to the Cuscuta genus and is the only parasitic genus within the morningglory family. Unlike most plants, it has no functional roots and very limited ability to produce its own food through photosynthesis. As a result, it depends entirely on other plants for survival and growth.
The weed produces very small seeds that are typically brown, yellow, or gray in color. These seeds closely resemble clover and alfalfa seeds, making contamination difficult to detect. Germination usually occurs during spring and early summer when soil temperatures range between 20°C and 30°C (68°F to 78°F).
After germination, dodder seedlings emerge from shallow soil depths and have limited energy reserves. Because of this, they must quickly locate a suitable host plant within five to ten days. If they fail to attach to a host during this period, the seedlings die.
One of the most recognizable characteristics of dodder is its thin, thread-like stems. These stems are usually yellow, orange, or pale green and contain no leaves. As the plant grows, it twists around nearby host plants in a counterclockwise direction. Once contact is made, dodder develops specialized structures called haustoria. These structures penetrate the host plant and create a direct connection to its water and nutrient supply.
As dodder spreads, it weakens the host plant by removing essential nutrients needed for normal growth and development. Heavy infestations can reduce crop vigor, lower forage quality, and decrease overall yields. Since clover and alfalfa are important forage crops for livestock production, dodder infestations can lead to economic losses for farmers.
Effective management begins with early identification. Farmers should regularly inspect fields for the characteristic yellow or orange thread-like stems wrapped around plants. Preventing the introduction of contaminated seed is also important because dodder seeds can easily be mixed with forage crop seed.
A combination of monitoring, sanitation, and timely control measures can help reduce the impact of this parasitic weed. By understanding its life cycle and identifying infestations early, growers can better protect clover and alfalfa fields from yield losses and maintain healthy forage production throughout the growing season.
