Hands-On Training for Small Beef, Sheep and Goat Producers

Hands-On Training for Small Beef, Sheep and Goat Producers

By Andi Anderson

Make plans now to attend the Beef & Sheep Small Farms Field Day from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, October 4, at the Eastern Agricultural Research Station, 16870 Bond Ridge Rd., Caldwell, OH 43724.

This all-day workshop is designed for small herds of beef cattle and goats, flocks of sheep, and new or beginning ruminant livestock producers who want practical, science-based training.

Participants will learn core skills every ruminant producer needs: grazing management that protects pasture health, nutrition planning for different life stages, straightforward livestock marketing strategies, and facilities and housing that improve animal comfort and safety.

Sessions are species-specific and include hands-on training in animal care and handling, basic animal health, and livestock evaluation—giving you confidence to apply what you learn at home.

The program is led by OSU Extension Educators and State Specialists who translate research into easy steps you can follow. Expect demonstrations, simple checklists, and clear examples suited to smaller operations and first-time owners. The approach is practical, friendly, and focused on improving profitability while caring for animals and land.

Registration is $30 per person, and lunch is included. Space is limited to the first 40 people who register by Monday, September 29, 2025. Registration is open now, and payment is accepted online. Prefer not to register online? That is okay, too. Contact Christine Gelley at the Noble County OSU Extension Office at 740-305-3173 to register and arrange to pay by check.

To view the agenda, register, and pay, visit: https://go.osu.edu/smallfarmruminantfieldday. Bring your questions and be ready to learn by doing.

Whether you care for a few acres or plan to grow your herd, this field day provides the essentials: better grazing, smarter nutrition, safer handling, effective health practices, and simple marketing ideas. Start the season with clear guidance, useful tools, and the support of the OSU Extension team.
