Highland County Hosts Successful Livestock Seminar

Highland County Hosts Successful Livestock Seminar

By Andi Anderson

Highland County recently hosted a successful Small Acreage Livestock Seminar on November 26, bringing together farmers and experts to discuss livestock care and farm management. Organized by Highland County Farm Bureau board trustees Tim Sheeley and Greg Tholen, the event provided valuable insights into the opportunities available to small-scale farmers.

Nathan Brown, an Ohio Farm Bureau state board member, addressed attendees about the benefits of Farm Bureau membership. He highlighted how the organization supports both small and large farmers and emphasized the importance of mental health resources for the farming community.

The Ohio State University Extension team, featuring Ty Hamilton, Jenny Stoneking, and Trevor Corboy, led informative sessions on raising livestock, small animals, and poultry suited for small farms. Hollie Bunn of UPI delivered an engaging presentation on beekeeping, adding a unique perspective to the seminar.

United Producers Inc. staff offered expertise in livestock marketing, direct sales, credit services, and risk management. They also shared tips for improving farm efficiency and profitability.

A hearty meal, sponsored by Highland Feed and Supply, was prepared by Karen Sheeley and served with assistance from local community members, creating a welcoming atmosphere for all attendees.

Looking ahead, Highland County is planning additional seminars to cover topics such as grass-fed livestock, pasture management, and calving, ensuring ongoing education and support for the farming community.

Events like these play a crucial role in helping farmers gain knowledge, build connections, and sustain their operations effectively. Highland County continues to lead in fostering growth and collaboration among small-scale farmers.
