Key events for Ohio farmers and seniors

By Andi Anderson

The Ohio State University Extension is providing a variety of valuable resources and events for farmers and seniors in the coming weeks. One of the highlighted programs is the Ohio Beef Quality Assurance (BQA) class, which aims to enhance the competitive edge for marketing Ohio cattle.

This program ensures that cattle are raised in a way that results in a high-quality, safe, and wholesome product. The BQA class, along with a complimentary dinner, is offered free of charge, though pre-registration is encouraged.

The event is scheduled for Thursday, September 5th, at the Fairfield County Fairgrounds in the Ed Sands Building. Registration begins at 5:45 p.m., with the class starting at 6:30 p.m.

In addition to the BQA program, OSU Extension has partnered with the Senior Hub and the Family YMCA of Lancaster & Fairfield County to offer an 8-week series of Matter of Balance classes.

These classes are designed to help seniors aged 60 and older manage and prevent falls, a common concern that can limit daily activities. The classes will be held at the Pickerington Senior Center, starting soon, and will include exercises to improve strength and balance.

For those interested in the latest developments in agriculture, tickets for the 2024 Farm Science Review (FSR) are now available for purchase at the Fairfield County OSU Extension office. The FSR, one of the largest farm trade shows in the United States, will take place from September 17th to 19th at the Molly Caren Agricultural Center.

Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the gate. This event not only showcases the latest in farm machinery but also offers a wide range of educational opportunities, including talks on crop systems, livestock production, natural resources management, and farm business management.

Additionally, the OSU Extension office in Fairfield County will be closed on Monday, September 2nd, in observance of Labor Day. Normal operations will resume on Tuesday, September 3rd.

Finally, for those planning to participate in the Open Class Competitions at the Fairfield County Fair, the fair books are now available at the Fairfield County Fair Office. The deadline for Open Class entries is September 25th, so be sure to pick up your copy soon.

These events and resources provided by OSU Extension are designed to support both the agricultural community and senior citizens in Ohio, ensuring they have access to the information and tools they need to succeed.
