Hay producers across many regions continue to face challenges with lower-than-expected yields. While weather conditions often receive most of the attention, experts suggest that several other factors may contribute to poor forage production.
According to Jordan Penrose, Ohio State University Extension Agriculture and Natural Resources Educator, Morgan County, concerns about below-average first-cutting hay yields led local agricultural organizations to discuss management options for livestock producers. Farmers explored strategies such as stockpiling grass and planting summer annual forage crops to help ensure enough feed is available for livestock during the coming winter months.
One important question raised during these discussions was whether weather alone was responsible for reduced hay production. Although drought and dry conditions have affected many areas in recent years, other issues may also be limiting yields.
A good starting point for producers is to review past records and compare current yields with previous seasons. If production has steadily declined over several years, it may indicate underlying field management concerns rather than a single season's weather event.
Field evaluation can provide valuable information. Farmers should inspect hay fields and pastures to determine whether desirable forage species remain dominant. They should also check for weed pressure, thinning stands, and other conditions that may reduce productivity. In some cases, weeds may be producing more growth than the intended forage crop.
Soil fertility is another important factor. Extension specialists often recommend soil testing when fields are not performing well. Hay production removes significant nutrients from the soil every year. According to the Ohio Agronomy Guide, each ton of cool-season grass hay removes approximately 40 pounds of nitrogen, 13 pounds of phosphorus, and 50 pounds of potassium. Without replacing these nutrients, long-term productivity can decline.
The age and condition of hay stands also deserve attention. Fields that have experienced drought stress or have received limited management over many years may become less productive. Older stands often thin out, leaving fewer plants available to produce quality forage.
Fortunately, declining stands do not always require complete renovation. Producers may improve productivity through practices such as frost seeding legumes during late winter or interseeding additional forage species into existing stands.
While weather remains an important factor in crop production, successful hay and pasture management requires attention to soil health, fertility, stand condition, and long-term planning. By regularly evaluating fields and using proven management practices, farmers can improve forage production and better prepare for future growing seasons.
