For the week ending May 11, 2025, Ohio farmers made slow progress in planting due to saturated soil conditions. Only 1.0 day was suitable for fieldwork across the state, according to the USDA.
Topsoil moisture was reported at 1% very short, 4% short, 45% adequate, and 50% surplus. Subsoil moisture followed with 1% very short, 1% short, 59% adequate, and 39% surplus. These conditions limited time in the field for most producers.
Corn planting reached 25%, only slightly ahead of last week’s 22%, but below last year’s 35% and the five-year average of 27%. Corn emergence reached 14%, a jump from 4% the previous week.
Soybean planting was at 25%, up slightly from 23% last week. Emergence moved to 11%, up from 1%. Both crops are behind historical averages due to wet soil.
Oat planting reached 82%, improving from 74% the previous week and ahead of the five-year average. Oat emergence stood at 67%, up from 40%. A few oat fields have started heading. Oats were rated 0% very poor, 0% poor, 21% fair, 75% good, and 4% excellent.
Winter wheat jointing was reported at 88%, while heading was at 14%. Winter wheat condition remained stable, with 2% very poor, 3% poor, 30% fair, 54% good, and 11% excellent.
Pasture and range conditions were favorable with 0% very poor, 3% poor, 24% fair, 61% good, and 12% excellent. As weather improves, Ohio producers hope to see faster progress in the coming weeks.
