Ohio farmers get expert solutions at 2024 farm science review

By Andi Anderson

Ohio farmers facing the challenges of the 2024 growing season can find answers at this year’s Farm Science Review, presented by The Ohio State University College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences (CFAES).

The 62nd annual event, held from September 17-19 at the Molly Caren Agricultural Center in London, Ohio, will address key concerns such as weather extremes, fluctuating grain prices, and strategies for managing farm profits.

According to Bruce Clevenger, associate professor and OSU Extension field specialist in farm management, farmers are working through a difficult year due to unstable commodity prices, unpredictable weather, and global issues.

“Despite these challenges, farmers are determined to maintain and grow their profits,” said Clevenger.

The "Ask the Expert" workshops will offer science-based recommendations on mitigating challenges such as shrinking profit margins and market fluctuations. These workshops run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., refreshing at the top and bottom of each hour. Attendees can engage with experts in farm management and ask specific questions about their operations.

New programming for students will also be introduced, focusing on livestock evaluation, soil health, and careers in agriculture, to inspire future agricultural professionals. “We want to provide hands-on learning for students and give them insight into potential careers,” said Josh Winters, OSU Extension educator.

Other expert topics include grain market outlooks, farm labor, accounting tools, pasture management, and fertilizer price comparisons. Sessions like "Farming Full-Time Without Adding Acres" and "Women in Ag: Farm Managers and Owners" will also be featured.

Tickets are available online for $10 or $15 at the gate, with free entry for children under 5.
