Ohio Lake Erie Commission Requests Public Comments about Maumee Area of Concern

Ohio Lake Erie Commission Requests Public Comments about Maumee Area of Concern

The Ohio Lake Erie Commission and Ohio EPA are accepting comments through May 22, 2023, on the proposed removal of the “Degradation of Aesthetics” beneficial use impairment within the Maumee Area of Concern (AOC).

Beneficial use impairments (BUIs) identify specific problems that can prevent a waterbody from meeting its full water quality potential. The Ohio Lake Erie Commission and Ohio EPA recommend removing the Degradation of Aesthetics BUI because the conditions now meet the restoration target. To meet the target, there cannot be persistent sludge deposits, oil sheens, or other materials within the Maumee AOC that may produce a nuisance.
