OSU Extension Offers Farm Stress Certification Program for Rural Mental Health Support

OSU Extension Offers Farm Stress Certification Program for Rural Mental Health Support

Ohio State University's College of Food, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences has launched the Farm Stress Certification program to address the mental health needs of farmers and rural communities. The program aims to equip mental health care providers with the knowledge and understanding required to effectively support individuals involved in farming and residing in rural areas.

Developed in collaboration with the College of Social Work, the certification program covers a range of farming topics, from agricultural practices to the unique stressors faced by rural communities. By comprehending the challenges specific to farming and rural life, counselors can offer appropriate guidance and assistance without suggesting farmers abandon their livelihoods.

Since its introduction in 2022, the Farm Stress Certification program has trained over 1,000 providers. The high demand has led to the creation of a second module addressing stressors faced by new and beginning farmers, urban agriculture, and the challenges experienced by farmers in the BIPOC and LGBTQ+ communities.

The program emphasizes the importance of telehealth services, enabling providers in urban areas to connect with farmers and rural residents. By maintaining a database of certified providers, the program promotes accessibility and encourages individuals to seek counseling.

Overall, the Farm Stress Certification program fosters mental health support tailored to the agricultural community's needs. It strives to reduce the stigma associated with seeking therapy in rural areas and encourages individuals to prioritize their mental well-being.

For immediate help, individuals can contact the National Suicide & Crisis Prevention Lifeline at 988, or the Ohio CareLine at 1-800-720-9616 for Ohio residents.
