Ohio’s farmers continued to make progress in the corn and soybean harvest during the week ending October 20, 2024, according to Ben Torrance, USDA NASS State Statistician. Despite dry conditions, cooler temperatures provided some relief to pastures.
Topsoil moisture was rated 68 percent short to very short, and the average temperature across the state was 49.0 degrees, 3.1 degrees below normal. Precipitation levels remained low, with an average of just 0.31 inches recorded, which is 0.36 inches below the typical amount for this time of year.
There were 6.0 days suitable for fieldwork, allowing farmers to continue their harvest activities. By this time, 97 percent of Ohio’s corn crop had reached or passed the mature stage, with 51 percent harvested for grain.
Soybean harvest was also advancing, with 78 percent of the crop harvested. Corn condition was rated 40 percent good to excellent, reflecting the ongoing dry weather’s impact on crop health.
In addition to row crop harvesting, farmers were completing the fourth cuttings of alfalfa and other dry hay, which was 95 percent complete. Winter wheat planting was progressing, with 77 percent of the crop in the ground.
Vegetable farmers continued harvesting peppers and cabbage, though concerns about frost were rising as cooler temperatures prevailed.
Pasture and range conditions remained challenging, with only 4 percent rated good to excellent, highlighting the difficulties farmers face in managing livestock under these dry conditions.
Despite these challenges, Ohio farmers are pressing forward, preparing for the end of the growing season and taking steps to manage their crops and livestock for the winter months.
In short, while Ohio’s cooler temperatures have eased some pressure on crops and pastures, the dry conditions persist, presenting ongoing challenges for farmers as they finish the harvest season.
