Accurate weight measurement plays a critical role in successful livestock management. Dr. John Yost, Extension Educator, Agriculture and Natural Resources, Wayne County, Ohio State University Extension, highlighted the importance of using scales rather than visual estimates when making management decisions in beef operations.
Dr. Yost emphasized the value of measurement with the statement, “We can’t manage what we don’t measure!” This idea reflects the importance of reliable data in livestock production. Although experienced producers may believe they can accurately estimate an animal's weight, research has shown that visual assessments are often incorrect.
Studies have found that people frequently underestimate cattle weights, with errors increasing as animal size grows. Research from the University of Minnesota showed that veterinarians, stockmen, and students often missed actual weights by more than 10 percent, sometimes by as much as 300 pounds. Such mistakes can affect several areas of farm management.
One of the most important areas influenced by weight accuracy is animal health management. Most livestock medications, except vaccines, are administered according to body weight. Estimating weights can lead to underdosing or overdosing animals. Overdosing increases costs unnecessarily, while underdosing can reduce treatment effectiveness, contribute to disease or pest resistance, and result in additional treatment expenses.
Weight accuracy is equally important in heifer development. Research has shown that heifers should reach approximately 60 to 70 percent of their mature body weight before breeding. Studies from the University of Nebraska found that heavier heifers achieved better pregnancy rates, performed better as two-year-old cows, and produced calves with higher birth and weaning weights. Achieving appropriate growth targets during development can improve long-term productivity and profitability.
Growth rate management is also important. Heifers should generally gain between 1.5 and 1.75 pounds per day during development. Excessively rapid weight gain can increase fat deposits in the udder, potentially reducing future milk production and overall calf performance.
Many producers cite time requirements as a reason for not weighing animals regularly. However, modern technologies have made the process easier and more efficient. Today's scale systems can connect to mobile applications and computer software for automatic record-keeping. New innovations include scales integrated into feeders and water systems, allowing weight collection during normal animal activity. Some companies are also developing video imaging technologies that estimate body weight and body condition scores.
Accurate weight information benefits farms beyond health treatments and breeding management. Reliable data can assist with sire evaluations, animal performance tracking, and marketing decisions. By replacing guesswork with accurate measurements, farmers can make better decisions, improve efficiency, and strengthen the profitability of their operations.
