ExploreAg Camps Inspire Future Agriculture Innovators

ExploreAg Camps Inspire Future Agriculture Innovators

By Andi Anderson

ExploreAg camps in Ohio are helping shape the next generation of agricultural leaders by introducing high school students to the wide range of careers within the agricultural industry. The program offers immersive experiences that allow students to explore parts of agriculture they may have never encountered before.

Each day of camp features visits to facilities across the state. Campers toured the Controlled Agriculture Research Complex, Student Farm, and Garden of Hope to learn how different factors like ground height can affect crop growth. They also played interactive games that made learning fun and engaging.

Visits to organizations like the Mid-Ohio Food Collective and Bane-Welker exposed students to food systems and equipment operations. At Bane-Welker, some students showed interest in internships, asking questions and taking early steps toward career planning.

Campers also visited Ohio State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine, Meat Science Lab, and Ag Engineering Department. There, they participated in hands-on activities—from playing a disease transmission game to cooking pork patties and operating a skid steer.

For many, it was their first time using such equipment, and the experience was both fun and educational.

The program included leadership training as well. Campers identified their personal leadership styles and tested them in a fun "minefield" game where blindfolded teammates navigated challenges using only verbal guidance.

Another exciting stop was Freshwater Farms, Ohio’s largest indoor fish hatchery. Campers held turtles and salamanders and even pet sturgeons. Later, at Heritage Cooperative, they learned about careers in grain handling and agricultural services. A drone demonstration at Burns Beef was a first-time experience for many.

The day concluded with a food challenge activity, bringing together ExploreAg and 4-H Spark campers for a fun, competitive cooking session. These camps not only educate but also build confidence and foster a lasting interest in agriculture.
