Fifth Annual Replacement Female Sale: Enhancing Ohio's Beef Cow Herd

Fifth Annual Replacement Female Sale: Enhancing Ohio's Beef Cow Herd

The Ohio Cattlemen's Association (OCA) is gearing up for its highly anticipated event, the fifth annual Replacement Female Sale, which will be held on Friday, November 24 at the Muskingum Livestock facility in Zanesville. This sale presents an excellent opportunity for both buyers and sellers in the beef industry to fulfill their need for quality replacements.

Consignments for the sale will include a variety of options such as cow-calf pairs, bred cows, and bred heifers. To ensure the quality of the animals, females must be under the age of five as of January 1, 2018, and may come from registered or commercial backgrounds. Bred females must be mated with bulls possessing known EPD (Expected Progeny Difference) values, and verification of pregnancy status will be required through accredited veterinary methods.

Last year's event showcased a wide range of offerings, including 102 lots of bred heifers, bred cows, and cow-calf pairs. The sale achieved great success, with an overall average of $1,647 and a total gross of $168,000. The market demand for young, high-quality cattle with strong genetics, especially yearling heifers bred artificially to proven calving ease sires, remains high.

As we navigate the current breeding season, it is an ideal time for producers to assess their herds and make informed marketing decisions for the fall. It is crucial to consider factors such as the animals' body condition and nutrition to optimize their marketability. Producers are encouraged to contact the Ohio Cattlemen's Association to obtain more information on consignments and sale details.

Consignments for the sale must be submitted to the Ohio Cattlemen's Association by October 2, 2017. For further details, interested parties can contact the association at (614) 873-6736 or visit their website at www.ohiocattle.org. Questions about the sale can be directed to the office at (740) 289-2071, Extension #242, or by email at grimes.1@osu.edu. We urge both buyers and sellers to consider participating in this sale, contributing to the ongoing improvement of Ohio's beef cow herd.
