Weather conditions have created challenges for livestock producers across many regions this year. Some areas experienced dry conditions and drought early in the season, while others received excessive rainfall and flooding. These changing conditions can affect forage quality and availability, influencing cattle performance and management decisions.
Despite weather-related challenges, beef producers are benefiting from strong cattle markets. Limited herd expansion, restricted calf supplies, and continued consumer demand for beef are supporting favorable feeder calf prices. At the same time, relatively stable corn and soybean markets are helping keep feed costs at manageable levels, creating opportunities for improved profit margins.
One management strategy receiving increased attention is creep feeding. Creep feeding provides supplemental nutrition to nursing calves, particularly when milk production naturally declines as cows progress through lactation. This additional nutrition can help calves continue gaining weight efficiently before weaning.
In years when calf prices remain strong and feed costs stay relatively low, creep feeding can be an effective tool for increasing returns. Research has shown that supplemental feeding may increase weaning weights by 50 to 100 pounds, depending on forage quality, milk production, and feed intake.
Although heavier calves may receive a slightly lower price per pound, the additional weight often helps offset that difference.
Past studies examining creep feeding found that excessive supplementation can reduce the future productivity of replacement females due to increased fat accumulation. As a result, many producers now focus on limit-feeding programs that provide nutrients without encouraging excessive calorie intake.
Protein plays an important role in supporting lean growth in nursing calves. In situations where forage quality is inadequate, a protein-rich creep feed can help meet nutritional needs and support efficient weight gain. High-quality forage systems, including grass-legume mixtures and creep grazing programs, can also contribute to improved calf performance.
Modern creep feeds often contain highly digestible fiber-based ingredients such as soyhulls, corn gluten feed, dried distillers grains, wheat middlings, beet pulp, and cottonseed hulls. These ingredients help reduce the risk of digestive disorders compared to diets that rely heavily on starch-rich grains. Limiting the amount of grain in creep feed mixtures can further support rumen health and reduce the risk of acidosis.
Research also indicates that controlling feed intake through limit-feeding can improve feed efficiency compared to unrestricted feeding. Producers may use specially formulated supplements, salt-based intake regulators, or controlled daily feeding programs to manage consumption levels.
Economic evaluations suggest that creep feeding can increase profitability under favorable market conditions. Additional weight at weaning often results in greater revenue, especially when feed costs remain moderate and calf supplies are limited.
As fall approaches, producers should review market conditions, evaluate feed prices, and determine whether creep feeding fits their operation. Careful planning and proper supplementation can help improve calf growth, increase weaning weights, and strengthen overall profitability in today's cattle market.
