Pasture managers across the Midwest have noticed an unusually high amount of red clover growing in many fields this year. According to Victor Shelton, Retired NRCS Agronomist and Grazing Specialist, a combination of environmental conditions and pasture management practices may have created the perfect opportunity for red clover to thrive.
In some pastures, red clover appears so abundant that it looks as though it was recently planted. However, many of these fields have not been seeded with red clover for years. Experts explain that viable seed likely remained in the soil seed bank from previous plantings and from natural seed production over several generations.
Red clover produces hard seeds with protective coatings that can remain dormant for years before germinating. These seeds become active only when weather conditions and soil environments are favorable. As a result, clover plants seen today may originate from seed produced many years ago.
Several factors contributed to this year's strong growth. Dry conditions during late summer and fall of the previous year reduced grass competition in some pastures. Grazing activity, hoof traffic, winter impacts, and thinning vegetation created small openings in the pasture canopy. These openings allowed sunlight, moisture, and soil contact needed for young clover seedlings to establish successfully.
Spring weather also played an important role. Adequate moisture and favorable temperatures helped both new seedlings and existing plants develop vigorously. Fields with abundant clover likely benefited from a combination of available seed, reduced competition, suitable temperatures, and timely rainfall.
Red clover is valued by livestock producers because it improves forage quality and contributes nitrogen to the soil. It also fills spaces between grasses and performs well in rotational grazing systems. In addition, red clover can help reduce some animal performance challenges associated with endophyte-infected tall fescue pastures.
Experts encourage farmers to manage these stands carefully. Allowing some plants to flower and produce seed can help replenish the soil seed bank and support future clover growth. At the same time, producers should avoid repeatedly grazing pastures too closely, as excessive grazing can weaken clover stands.
Leaving at least four inches of grass-clover residue before winter, limiting unnecessary nitrogen applications where clover is already abundant, and encouraging occasional seed production can help maintain healthy pastures.

Favorable timing, proper management, seed availability, moisture, and reduced competition all aligned to create ideal growing conditions. The experience serves as a reminder that improving pasture productivity is not always about planting something new. In many cases, good grazing management can unlock the potential already present in the field and support long-term forage success.
