Ohio Farm Bureau Supports Youth Through Champion Market Barrow Purchase

The 2026 Ohio State Fair concluded with the highly anticipated Sale of Champions livestock auction, an event that celebrates the achievements of young exhibitors while supporting agricultural youth development programs across the state.

One of the highlights of the auction was the sale of the Grand Champion Market Barrow, exhibited by Parker Elchinger of Henry County. The champion animal was purchased for $50,000 by Ohio Farm Bureau, in partnership with Bob Evans Farms and Nationwide. The purchase showcased the organizations' continued commitment to supporting young people involved in agriculture and livestock programs.

The Sale of Champions is an important tradition at the Ohio State Fair, recognizing the hard work, dedication, and livestock management skills demonstrated by junior exhibitors. Participants spend months caring for and preparing their animals, gaining valuable experience in animal husbandry, responsibility, record-keeping, and leadership.

Of the $50,000 sale price for the Grand Champion Market Barrow, $13,000 was awarded directly to Parker Elchinger. The remaining $37,000 was directed to the Virgil L. Strickler Youth Reserve Program, which provides financial support and recognition to youth participants at the Ohio State Fair.

The 2026 Sale of Champions generated a total of $396,500. Of that amount, $267,500 was contributed to the Youth Reserve Program, helping ensure continued support for young agricultural exhibitors. The program plays a vital role in encouraging youth involvement in livestock projects and agricultural education.

Established in 1995, the Virgil L. Strickler Youth Reserve Program was created to reward junior exhibitors who participate in the Ohio State Fair. Since its founding, the program has distributed more than $5.6 million to support youth involved in agriculture. The initiative has helped thousands of young people gain opportunities, recognition, and encouragement as they develop skills that will benefit them throughout their lives.

The continued success of the Sale of Champions demonstrates the strong support that agricultural organizations, businesses, and community partners provide to the next generation of industry leaders. Through these investments, young exhibitors are rewarded for their hard work while receiving encouragement to pursue future careers and opportunities in agriculture.
