August is an exciting time across Ohio, bringing together the Ohio State Fair, back-to-school preparations, and an abundant supply of fresh local produce. It is also the time when communities celebrate National Farmers Market Week, which took place from August 2 to August 8, in 2026.
Farmers markets play an important role in connecting consumers with local farmers and food producers. These markets offer fresh fruits, vegetables, baked goods, and other locally produced items while helping support small businesses and agricultural enterprises. Shopping at a farmers market allows consumers to enjoy high-quality products while contributing to the growth of local economies.
Many visitors appreciate farmers markets for the opportunity to purchase fresh foods directly from producers. Markets also serve as gathering places where people can meet neighbors, reconnect with friends, and learn more about local agriculture. The welcoming atmosphere makes farmers markets popular destinations for families and community members of all ages.
One example of the positive impact of farmers markets is the "Veggies for Veterans" initiative. This Farmers Feeding Veteran Program is a partnership between American Legion Post 62 and the Chillicothe Farmers Market.
Through the program, eligible veterans receive market tokens that can be used to purchase food products from local vendors. According to program information, "This program does more than provide groceries. It builds connection, honors service, and strengthens our local food system by supporting both veterans and local growers."
Programs like this demonstrate how farmers markets help improve food access while strengthening relationships between communities and local producers. Across Ohio, numerous initiatives connect residents with healthy food options and encourage support for local agriculture.
The Ohio State University Extension Direct Food and Agricultural Marketing Program worked with the Ohio Farmers Market Network to gather feedback from market managers, vendors, and shoppers about the value of farmers markets. Responses highlighted benefits such as fresh local food, support for local businesses, community engagement, and opportunities to make meaningful social connections.
Farmers markets continue to be an important part of Ohio's agricultural landscape. They provide a direct link between producers and consumers while creating opportunities for education, economic growth, and community development. As National Farmers Market Week is celebrated, residents are encouraged to visit local markets, explore seasonal produce, and support the farmers and businesses that help strengthen Ohio's local food system.
