Ohio has taken an important step in preserving its history for future generations through the creation of a special time capsule at the Ohio State Fair. The capsule was officially sealed during the State Fair's 50 Year Club meeting and will remain closed until 2076, when the United States celebrates its 300th anniversary.
The project is a collaborative effort involving the Ohio State Fair, Ohio History Connection, and America 250-Ohio. Organizers spent months collecting items that reflect Ohio’s people, culture, innovation, achievements, agriculture, and daily life in 2026. The goal is to provide future Ohioans with a meaningful snapshot of the present day.
Ohio Governor Mike DeWine highlighted the importance of preserving history for generations to come. He said, “With this time capsule, we are providing future generations with a snapshot of what life looked like in this era. Whether it is the history we are documenting now to be shared with Ohioans in 50 years, or the story we are telling today to Ohioans and visitors, telling Ohio’s story is so important.”
One of the most significant items included in the capsule is a specially created book featuring all 88 Ohio counties. The publication contains stories and images contributed by communities across the state, helping document Ohio’s identity in 2026.
Ohio History Connection Executive Director and CEO Megan Wood emphasized the value of community voices in preserving history. She stated, “Ohioans of the future need to know what Ohio looks like today, and the best way to tell that story is through the voices of the counties.”
The capsule also contains hundreds of items representing modern Ohio life. These include letters from state leaders to future residents, sports jerseys from professional teams, a flag flown over the Ohio Statehouse on Independence Day, and everyday items such as Crocs, a Stanley Cup, and AirPods. Additional keepsakes highlight Ohio’s food, agriculture, arts, culture, history, outdoors, and current events.
America 250-Ohio Co-Chair and Ohio Expositions Commission member Doug Preisse reflected on the project's significance. He said, “On behalf of America 250-Ohio, this time capsule is a historic milestone that will capture the essence of our great state for future generations.”
The capsule will be displayed in the Ohio Showcase Building at the Ohio Expo Center and State Fairgrounds. Ohio State Fair Executive Director Adam Heffron noted, “It’s important to preserve the story of what our state looks like today in 2026, and to keep this time capsule secure here at the fairgrounds for decades to come.”
When opened in 2076, the time capsule will provide future generations with a unique look at Ohio’s history, values, and aspirations, ensuring the legacy of today’s communities remains preserved for decades to come.
