Virgil Strickler, the longest-serving general manager in the history of the Ohio Expo Center and Ohio State Fair, was awarded The Ohio State University’s 2024 Distinguished Service Award on December 15, 2024, during autumn commencement.

Strickler is celebrated for his exceptional leadership and commitment to Ohio’s agricultural youth. During his tenure, he established the nationally acclaimed Youth Reserve Program, which has provided over $4.6 million in scholarships to more than 44,500 young exhibitors since 1995.

In 2023, this program was renamed the Virgil L. Strickler Youth Reserve Program to honor his extraordinary contributions.

“Virgil Strickler’s legacy is a testament to mentorship, education, and service,” said Cathann A. Kress, Vice President of Agricultural Administration at Ohio State. “His efforts have inspired generations of youth and shaped the fair into a national leader.”

A strong advocate for Ohio State University Extension and Ohio 4-H programs, Strickler ensured financial support for youth activities and educational opportunities at the fair. His lifelong dedication to agriculture stems from his early experiences growing up on a farm in Fairfield County, where he participated in 4-H and FFA programs.

In addition to his fairground leadership, Strickler contributed to organizations such as the Ohio Agricultural Council and Ohio Farm Bureau Federation. His achievements have earned him numerous awards, including the Honorary American FFA Degree (2018) and the Ohio Friend of 4-H Award (2023).

The Distinguished Service Award highlights individuals who go above and beyond in their service to the university and community. Strickler’s decades-long commitment to Ohio’s agricultural and youth communities exemplifies the essence of this prestigious recognition. His impact continues to inspire future generations of agricultural leaders.
