Cheese Making 101 with Great Lakes Cheese
Ohio Ag Connection - 02/11/2020

The American Dairy Association (ADA) Mideast recently helped Great Lakes Cheese in Hiram, Ohio, host an educational event for Cleveland area students about the dairy community and cheesemaking.

Leaders from Great Lakes Cheese took a break during their annual business meeting and were paired with 80 Fuel Up to Play 60 sixth and seventh graders from Cleveland Metropolitan School District for "Cheese Making 101." Students learned first-hand about the cheese business, including procurement, food safety, quality, distribution and sales. A Master Cheesemaker from Great Lakes Cheese guided students in making their own cheese, while explaining the science and process of cheesemaking on a larger scale.

To prepare the students for this special day, ADA Mideast hosted a virtual farm tour so they could see how dairy farmers care for their cows and land to produce wholesome milk, which is essential in making high quality cheese. During the broadcast from the farm, students were able to send questions to the dairy farmer to be answered live.

ADA Mideast is the dairy promotion checkoff program serving more than 1,900 dairy farmers in Ohio and West Virginia.
