Georgia farmers face climate challenges

Georgia farmers face climate challenges

By Jamie Martin

Georgia farmers are grappling with the increasing challenges of climate change, including frost, droughts, and floods. These unpredictable conditions are impacting crops, finances, and farming sustainability.

In 2023, Georgia lost 90% of its peach harvest due to an unseasonal spring frost following a warm winter. Blueberries, another major crop, face similar risks, as highlighted by Pam Knox, an agricultural climatologist. She said, “Both of those crops are very susceptible to spring frost.”

While wealthier farms use sprinklers, heaters, and even helicopters to combat frost, smaller farms often lack such resources. Diamond Hill Farm, a small sustainable farm, struggled with extreme weather swings in 2023, including high heat, torrential rain, and frost.

Rainfall patterns have also shifted. While the annual rainfall in northeast Georgia remains consistent, its distribution has changed, leading to extreme floods and droughts. These conditions strain farms without advanced irrigation systems.

Hurricanes further compound the issues. Knox explained that stronger and quicker hurricanes could devastate small farms, often leading to financial instability. “Every time that happens, they have to take out loans… and if they can’t pay it back, they’re not going to get any more loans,” she said.

To support local farmers, reducing agricultural waste and buying locally are crucial. Pam Knox emphasized the importance of farmers' markets and Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) programs. She noted, “Supporting the local economy is good for the earth and your community.”

By adopting sustainable practices and relying on local support, Georgia farmers can navigate the challenges of climate change while ensuring long-term agricultural viability.
