H2Ohio Initiative Surges with 32% Increase in Enrolled Acres

H2Ohio Initiative Surges with 32% Increase in Enrolled Acres

By Andi Anderson

The H2Ohio initiative in Ohio, spearheaded by Governor DeWine and the Ohio Department of Agriculture (ODA), is making significant strides in addressing water quality challenges affecting Lake Erie. With over 1.8 million acres now enrolled, representing a remarkable 32% increase compared to previous sign-up periods, H2Ohio is gaining momentum in its mission to safeguard Ohio's water resources.

During a recent open enrollment period in 14 counties within the Maumee River Watershed, farmers had the opportunity to re-enroll existing acres into Best Management Practices (BMPs) while also enrolling new acres. Impressively, 90% of original participants chose to re-enroll, demonstrating strong commitment from the agricultural community. Additionally, approximately 25% of producers in the new Maumee enrollment are new to the program.

Local Soil and Water Conservation Districts report a noticeable uptick in enrolled acres across eligible counties, including Allen, Hancock, Hardin, and Putnam. These counties collectively contribute substantial cropland acreage to the initiative.

In parallel, ten additional counties within the Western Lake Erie Basin (WLEB) are actively engaged in H2Ohio, with approximately 800 farmers enrolling 600,000 acres into BMPs. This concerted effort is poised to yield significant benefits in reducing phosphorus runoff, a primary contributor to harmful algal blooms in Lake Erie.

Through incentivizing farmers to implement scientifically proven BMPs, such as Voluntary Nutrient Management Plans (VNMPs), H2Ohio aims to curtail phosphorus runoff into Lake Erie. With estimates suggesting a potential reduction of 420,000 pounds of phosphorus loading over the next few years, the impact of H2Ohio on water quality is undeniable.

Participation in H2Ohio requires adherence to VNMPs, ensuring strategic nutrient management and conservation effectiveness. As nearly half of the cropland in the WLEB falls under H2Ohio coverage, the initiative's holistic approach underscores its commitment to fostering sustainable agricultural practices and protecting Ohio's water resources.

Governor DeWine's H2Ohio initiative continues to lead the charge in addressing water quality challenges, employing a comprehensive strategy rooted in science and data. By supporting best farming practices, minimizing pollution, and revitalizing water infrastructure, H2Ohio remains at the forefront of safeguarding Ohio's waterways.
