Farm and ranch families are being encouraged to start planning now for future ownership transitions through a new educational resource developed by the National Cattlemen's Beef Association (NCBA).
The organization has launched a free online Succession Planning Learning Module that helps producers understand the process of transferring farm or ranch assets, leadership, and responsibilities to the next generation. The program is intended to make a complex topic easier to understand and discuss.
Many agricultural families recognize the importance of succession planning but postpone discussions because they can be sensitive and challenging. The new module provides a structured approach that guides participants through key planning considerations and helps them create a customized transition strategy.
"I've been through transition discussions with my kids, and I know it's not comfortable. As a former ag lender, I've also seen my community struggle with these conversations," said NCBA President Gene Copenhaver. "I hope resources like this make it easier for cattle producers across the country to secure the future of their farms and ranches."
"You owe it to your loved ones to have the courage to tackle this challenge by creating a succession plan," said Professor Shannon Ferrell of Oklahoma State University, a specialist in estate and succession planning. "If you don't plan now, you may end up leaving your family with a burden instead of a gift."
The learning module includes a workbook and educational materials that encourage producers to evaluate their goals, discuss expectations, and develop a roadmap for the future of their operation. Additional support resources include webinars, training sessions, and podcast content focused on succession planning topics.
