Ohio Approves Mega Madison County Solar Farm Linked to Bill Gates

By Andi Anderson

Ohio state regulators have granted approval for the Oak Run Solar Project, signaling a substantial leap forward in renewable energy. Despite encountering resistance from local authorities, this endeavor, spanning 6,050 acres, has secured the green light, with a segment of the land being under the ownership of technology mogul Bill Gates.

The Oak Run Solar Project, situated across Monroe, Somerford, and Deercreek townships near state Route 29, is poised to become a major player in Ohio's energy landscape. Planned by Sarah Moser, senior development manager at Savion, the project is a testament to the commitment towards sustainable energy solutions.

With a projected cost exceeding $1 billion, the initiative is a significant investment in clean energy infrastructure. Spread across vast farmlands, including parcels owned by Gates' Midwest Farms LLC, the project underscores the importance of utilizing open spaces for renewable energy generation.

Expected to generate 800 megawatts of power, the Oak Run Solar Project surpasses previous solar ventures in the state, signaling a shift towards more ambitious renewable energy goals. Despite uncertainties surrounding the construction timeline, stakeholders remain optimistic about the project's potential to transform the region's energy landscape.

Sarah Moser expressed gratitude towards all stakeholders involved in pushing the project forward, emphasizing a collaborative approach towards its realization. While the exact start date for construction remains unclear, Savion has outlined a potential timeline with construction possibly commencing in 2025.

The approval of the Oak Run Solar Project marks a significant step towards a cleaner, more sustainable energy future for Ohio, highlighting the importance of innovation and collaboration in addressing environmental challenges.
