Ohio Honors Conservation Champions for H2Ohio Success

By Andi Anderson

The Ohio Department of Agriculture (ODA) recognized the exceptional efforts of two Soil and Water Conservation Districts (SWCDs) in contributing to the success of the H2Ohio program. The program, launched in 2019, is a statewide initiative aimed at enhancing water quality across Ohio.

Erie and Mercer County SWCDs were honored with the prestigious H2Ohio Lifetime Conservation Advocate Award during the Ohio Federation of Soil and Water Conservation Districts Annual Partnership Meeting. ODA Director Brian Baldridge presented the awards, highlighting the crucial role played by SWCDs in connecting farmers with conservation resources and practices.

Director Baldridge emphasized the indispensable role of SWCDs, stating, "H2Ohio wouldn't be possible without the unwavering commitment of our SWCDs. They are the driving force behind improving water quality in their communities, supporting farmers, and implementing effective conservation solutions."

The H2Ohio Lifetime Conservation Advocate Award recognizes individuals and organizations that exhibit exceptional leadership and dedication to improving water quality through H2Ohio. Awardees are commended for their commitment, innovation, collaboration, and relentless pursuit of positive change.

H2Ohio, employing a data-driven approach, addresses complex water quality challenges statewide. The program focuses on reducing algal blooms, minimizing pollution, and ensuring access to clean drinking water through various initiatives:

  • Promoting best farming practices: Supporting farmers in adopting sustainable agricultural methods to protect soil and water resources.
  • Reducing road salt runoff: Implementing strategies to minimize the impact of winter road salt on waterways.
  • Combating litter: Organizing cleanup efforts and promoting responsible waste management practices.
  • Removing outdated dams: Restoring natural river flows and improving aquatic ecosystems.
  • Conserving land: Protecting valuable natural areas and preventing soil erosion.
  • Revitalizing water infrastructure: Upgrading and expanding water treatment facilities to ensure reliable access to clean water.

The success of H2Ohio relies on the dedication and expertise of local SWCDs, exemplified by districts like Erie and Mercer counties. These districts serve as trusted partners for farmers, offering guidance and resources to implement conservation practices on their land. Through collaborative efforts, these individuals and organizations are making a significant impact on protecting Ohio's water resources for future generations.
