Ohio state leads with new waterman dairy

By Andi Anderson

The Ohio State University College of Food, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (CFAES) is taking a significant step forward in animal agriculture with the construction of a new, state-of-the-art dairy facility at the Waterman Agricultural and Natural Resources Laboratory in Columbus.

This innovative facility, replacing an outdated structure from 1972, is set to be completed by spring 2025 and will serve as a hub for education, research, and outreach in dairy farming.

“We’re making exciting progress,” said Graham Cochran, CFAES associate dean for operations. “The new dairy will be a modern, fully autonomous facility, supporting our work for years to come.”

Located on the 261-acre Waterman site, the new dairy will be equipped with the latest technology from Lely North America, including a robotic milking system, a feeding robot, and automated manure management systems.

These advancements are designed to improve cow comfort and maximize the learning and research opportunities for students and faculty. The facility will house 60 Jersey milking cows, all of which will have access to the robotic milking system.

"The new Waterman Dairy will provide state-of-the-art technology and accommodations to enhance the college’s academic and research programs," said Maurice Eastridge, professor and senior associate chair of animal sciences.

The new facility also promises to be a valuable asset for public engagement and the broader agricultural industry. According to Scott Higgins, CEO of the American Dairy Association Mideast and the Ohio Dairy Producers Association, "The new dairy will impact the student experience and tell the story of dairy farming and milk products through public engagement."

In addition to the Waterman Dairy, construction is also underway for the Multispecies Animal Learning Center (MALC), expected to open in fall 2025. The MALC will provide a space for interaction between people and animals, fostering education for Ohio State students, K-12 students, and the broader community.

With these new facilities, Ohio State is positioning itself as a leader in modern animal agriculture education, ensuring that students are well-prepared for careers in the industry.

The Waterman Dairy will not only serve as a cutting-edge learning environment but will also play a crucial role in workforce development and public awareness of advances in the dairy industry.
