Ohio State University's Molly Caren Agricultural Center Faces Severe Tornado Damage

By Andi Anderson

On February 28, 2024, central Ohio experienced severe weather, including nine confirmed tornados that left a trail of destruction. Among the affected areas was The Ohio State University's Molly Caren Agricultural Center in Madison County, particularly significant as the annual host of the Farm Science Review, an event by the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences (CFAES). Fortunately, no individuals or animals were present in the affected buildings during the storm, resulting in no injuries.

Initial assessments reveal damage or destruction to at least 10 university-owned buildings at the site. Additionally, privately-owned structures on the Farm Science Review grounds bore the brunt of the tornado's impact. Graham Cochran, CFAES associate dean for operations, affirmed immediate recovery efforts, including clearing the debris field and assessing each damaged building.

While the site is currently closed due to safety and structural concerns, CFAES remains committed to hosting the Farm Science Review as scheduled from September 17-19, 2024. Plans are underway to explore alternatives, including new or temporary facilities, ensuring the continuation of this educational showcase.

Matthew Sullivan, superintendent of the Molly Caren Agricultural Center, emphasized the determination to continue the tradition. "Farm Science Review is an annual destination for many and a premier education showcase for the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences. That’s our job—to ensure that when they show up, it’s the best farm show in the United States."

The tornado also impacted the nearby Madison County Airport, a significant point of arrival for Farm Science Review attendees, underscoring the extensive reach of the severe weather.
