$500K grant boosts Rob's Horst packing

By Andi Anderson

Rob’s Horst Packing LLC, based in Columbiana, has been awarded a $500,000 grant through the Ohio Meat Processing Grant program.

This grant is part of an initiative by the state to strengthen local meat processing operations and improve the efficiency of small-scale meat harvesters and processors.

The Ohio Meat Processing Grant program awarded a total of $14 million to 51 businesses in the state, with the goal of constructing new facilities or upgrading existing ones.

Governor Mike DeWine highlighted the importance of these grants in maintaining a strong food supply chain. "Meat harvesters and processors help keep our supply chain strong and our grocery stores and restaurants stocked," DeWine said. The funding will allow businesses like Rob’s Horst Packing to modernize and adapt to current industry trends.

Over four rounds of this grant program, 179 grants have been awarded to meat processors in 62 of Ohio’s 88 counties, totaling nearly $42 million in support. Lt. Governor Jon Husted emphasized the significance of these grants in supporting small, local farmers and processors.

"These grants help local farmers in Ohio serve their local customers with high-quality meats," said Husted, adding that the funding helps businesses enhance productivity and keep locally grown food affordable.

The Ohio Department of Development, in partnership with the Ohio Department of Agriculture, administers the program. Brian Baldridge, director of the Ohio Department of Agriculture, noted the crucial role of the meat processing sector in supporting Ohio’s agriculture industry, which is the state’s largest economic sector.

He highlighted the importance of offering consumers safe, healthy, and high-quality meat products through these improvements.

This funding will enable Rob’s Horst Packing to better serve its community, ensuring they can provide locally sourced, top-quality meats to customers while staying competitive in the industry.
