Farmers and ranchers across the nation are dedicated to conserving water — a critical resource for both crops and communities. Through a range of conservation practices, they ensure cleaner water and sustainable farming systems.
Conservation tillage and cover cropping are central to their efforts. By minimizing soil disturbance and maintaining continuous ground cover, farmers enhance water retention and reduce nutrient runoff. USDA data shows conservation tillage is now used on over 200 million acres, with millions more enrolled in NRCS programs supporting no-till and reduced tillage.
In wetter regions, conservation drainage systems — including constructed wetlands, bioreactors, and saturated buffers — help manage water flow and filter out nitrates before they enter local waterways. These systems prevent soil erosion and maintain nutrient balance.
Effective nutrient management is another essential tool. Farmers follow the “4R” principles, ensuring the right nutrient is applied at the right rate, time, and place. Precision agriculture technology allows more targeted applications, improving efficiency while reducing runoff and costs.
Livestock producers contribute by installing fencing to prevent animals from entering streams, managing manure safely, and practicing prescribed grazing. These efforts protect water sources while maintaining healthy pastures and reducing soil erosion.
Farmers continue to adopt conservation practices that protect water quality, proving that sustainable agriculture benefits both the environment and the communities they serve. Their collective work ensures cleaner water and resilient farming for the future.
