The Ohio Department of Agriculture (ODA) is responding to a challenging season by extending the deadline for participants in the H2Ohio program. Due to a late harvest and adverse weather conditions, the deadline for planting overwintering cover crops is being extended.
Producers enrolled in the H2Ohio program in the 24 counties of the Western Lake Erie Basin will now have until November 15, 2023, to plant their overwintering cover crops. This extension aims to accommodate the difficulties faced by farmers and ensure the successful implementation of cover crops.
For those seeking further details about the H2Ohio Program or the extended deadline for cover crop planting, it is recommended to reach out to the local Soil and Water Conservation District.
H2Ohio, an initiative championed by Governor DeWine, is a comprehensive and data-driven approach to safeguarding clean and safe water in Ohio. It focuses on encouraging best management practices in agriculture, wetland restoration, and the replacement of home septic systems to reduce nutrients contributing to harmful algal blooms.
