Ohio Agriculture Gains Funding in New State Budget

Ohio Agriculture Gains Funding in New State Budget

By Andi Anderson

Ohio’s agricultural sector will receive important support in the state’s newly approved two-year budget, valued at $90.5 billion.

The budget, passed by the Ohio General Assembly through House Bill 96, is now with Governor Mike DeWine for final approval and possible line-item vetoes.

A major highlight for farmers is the continued funding for the H2Ohio initiative. This program helps improve water quality across the state.

With more farmers beginning to show long-term results from conservation practices, the sustained investment over the next two years ensures the program can continue making progress.

In response to spring struggles with livestock disease and health concerns, the budget increases funding for animal health and emergency disease response. This includes resources for expanded livestock disease testing, helping farms respond quickly and effectively to threats.

The Ohio State College of Veterinary Medicine also sees a boost in funding. The budget provides for more student seats in veterinary programs, with a focus on opening opportunities for Ohio residents. This investment supports the future of animal agriculture in the state by training more local veterinarians.

To address land use issues, the budget allocates additional funding to the Brownfield Remediation Program, allowing communities to clean and redevelop former industrial or contaminated sites. This supports both environmental and agricultural land use planning.

According to officials, these measures reflect Ohio’s continued commitment to the agricultural community. “Support like this shows the state’s dedication to long-term success for our farmers,” said a representative from the Ohio Farm Bureau.

The finalized budget must be signed into law by midnight on June 30. More updates and detailed information will be shared by the Ohio Farm Bureau in the coming weeks.
