Ohio farmers lead efforts for clean water in 2024 report

By Andi Anderson

The Ohio Farm Bureau's annual Water Quality Status Report showcases Ohio farmers' commitment to clean water.

This year's report highlights the substantial voluntary conservation efforts undertaken by farmers across the state.

These large-scale initiatives are yielding measurable results, demonstrating farmers' dedication to environmental responsibility.

This year's report also delves into various research projects supported by the Blanchard River Demonstration Farms Network.

This project is a collaboration between the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service and the Ohio Farm Bureau Federation, aimed at improving water quality through innovative agricultural practices.

2024 Highlights

Farm-Level Water Quality Efforts: The Ohio Agriculture Conservation Initiative released its 2023 Assessment Survey Report, detailing the conservation practices used by farmers in the Sandusky watershed.

The report highlights significant efforts to manage water and nutrients effectively, while also identifying areas for improvement and continued education.

H2Ohio Program Expansion: Governor Mike DeWine announced the statewide open enrollment for the H2Ohio program, aiming to enroll 500,000 acres in 64 counties.

This program incentivizes farmers to implement best management practices to prevent nutrient runoff and improve water quality.

Saturated Buffers Project: Researchers at Wright State University’s Lake Campus completed a study on the effectiveness of saturated buffers in the Grand Lake watershed.

Funded by the Blanchard River Demonstration Farms Network, this project shows promise in improving water quality by managing field drainage more effectively.

Stream Bank Erosion Research: Ohio State University researchers, led by Dr. Asmita Murumkar, are tracking stream migration and erosion in the Blanchard River watershed. This project aims to understand how sediment erosion affects stream health and water quality.

Pilot Watershed Project: A five-year pilot project in the Shallow Run watershed began last summer, involving farmers, landowners, and researchers from multiple universities.

The project aims to link nutrient management strategies with real-time water quality changes, working in collaboration with the H2Ohio program and the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service.

These initiatives and research projects highlight the commitment of Ohio farmers to improving water quality through innovative and effective practices. The 2024 Water Quality Status Report underscores the importance of these efforts in maintaining a healthy and sustainable environment for future generations.
