The USDA's Farm Service Agency (FSA) opened enrollment for the Grassland Conservation Reserve Program (Grassland CRP). This program lets you conserve your grasslands while still grazing livestock and harvesting hay. It's a win-win for wildlife habitat, soil health.
Zach Ducheneaux, FSA Administrator, highlighted the importance of the event, stating, “Grassland CRP is a vital conservation tool that supports two of USDA’s top priorities: the wellbeing of American agriculture and the health of America’s grasslands."
It was also noted by him that over 6.8 million acres have been signed up for conservation over the past three years, demonstrating that agricultural productivity and conservation can coexist and complement each other.
The 2023 Grassland CRP signup was a success, with over 2.3 million acres accepted. This brings the total enrollment to 8.64 million acres in Grassland CRP, contributing to the overall 24.8 million acres in CRP programs.
Landowners and producers interested in the program can find details and apply at their local USDA Service Center by June 28th.
Landowners enrolled in CRP can get financial assistance for forest management through the Forest Management Incentive (FMI) program.
And, if your CRP contract is expiring, the Transition Incentives Program (TIP) can help you sell or lease your land to new, veteran, or disadvantaged farmers or ranchers who want to use sustainable practices.
